A Helping Hand is not a book meant to teach sign language. Rather, it is a book meant to teach how to use sign language properly. It is designed to help interpreters and those interested in furthering their sign language skills.

In the first part of this book, the author compares Signed Exact English (SEE) to American Sign Language (ASL). She explains many different grammatical elements of sign language, including condensed signing; homonyms, antonyms, and synonyms; tense indicators; and nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions, and interrogatives.

In the second part of this book, the author answers numerous sign language and deaf ministry questions. She also gives practical advice to the hearing, to the pastor, and to the beginning interpreter on how to make mistakes properly, how to work with the deaf in job situations, and how to teach sign language.
